IRIX 5.3 Documentation
IRIX 5.3 is an upwardly compatible version of IRIX 5.2 which
incorporates bug fixes and performance enhancements. IRIX 5.3
is supported on all platforms that run IRIX 5.2 plus Indy R4600,
Indigo2 R4600SC, Corona, and OnyxLE (R8000 based systems are not
supported by any IRIX 5.* release). The purpose of this release
is to provide new features and enhanced performance relative to
previous versions of IRIX 5.

A description of the real-time capabilities of IRIX Version
5.3 running on Onyx and Challenge multiprocessor systems.
- Using Asynchronous I/O and Direct I/O in IRIX 5.X, (7/27/94)
Asynchronous I/O and direct I/O are two new features
available with the 5.X release of IRIX. They provide
finer control of I/O operations than those provided
by standard UNIX(TM) I/O mechanisms, and will have many
applications in real-time processing, fast data transfer,
and on-line transaction processing (OLTP).
